Scope and content

Since its early years, the Society has maintained the tradition of proposing foreigners of eminent attainments, rank or situation, or persons who have rendered distinguished service towards the attainment of the objects of the Society, to be an Honorary Member. The total number of Honorary Members was for many years limited to thirty according to the Rules of the Society. When a vacancy opened up, primarily due to death of members, the Council would propose and invite selected individuals to fill up the vacancy.

This sub-series contains correspondence regarding invitation of Honorary Membership as well as further correspondence between the Society and its Honorary Members. Most of the 19th-century correspondence did not survive in the archives.
