Administrative history

The Royal Asiatic Society of Great Britain and Ireland was founded by the eminent Sanskrit scholar Sir Henry Thomas Colebrooke on the 15th March 1823. It received its Royal Charter from King George IV on the 11th August 1824 'for the investigation of subjects connected with and for the encouragement of science, literature and the arts in relation to Asia'. It continues as a forum for those who are interested in the languages, cultures and history of Asia to meet and exchange ideas.

Scope and content

Documents and correspondence concerned with grants and donations given or administered by the Royal Asiatic Society. These are:

  • Two letters from Leopold von Schroeder, an Indologist from the Russian Empire, who later worked in Austria-Hungary, to the [Royal Asiatic Society] concerning donation of money for the India Exploration Fund. These are handwritten in German, dated 7 June 1904 and 6 July 1904.
  • Letter from Beatrice de Cardi, Secretary, Council for British Archaeology to Mrs Davis, Secretary, Royal Asiatic Society, to inform that she is enclosing the Grant for £65 and could she therefore have a cheque made payable to her. Handwritten, dated 10 April 1957.
  • Correspondence concerning the overseeing and administration of a grant from the J.D. Rockefeller Fund to the Calico Museum of Textiles, Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India, for preparation of catalogues. The Royal Asiatic Society agreed to administer this fund from which funds were given to Mr John C. Irwin, Keeper of the Indian Section, V&A Museum, to undertake the work. Correspondents include the Royal Asiatic Society, the Victoria & Albert Museum, John Irwin, and the Asian Cultural Council, 43 pieces, handwritten and typed, dated 7 June 1966 - 29 May 1986.
  • Correspondence concerning the administration of the will of Susan Skilliter and the setting up of a library at Newnham College of her books. The Royal Asiatic Society contributed towards a fund to enable the library's establishment. The items include a copy of her death notice in The Times, 18 September 1985 and a copy of her will, 31 pieces, printed, typed and handwritten, dated 18 September 1985 - 20 January 1987.
  • Correspondence concerning a donation to a fund for the Khalidi Library, Jerusalem, for conservation work to which the Royal Asiatic Society made a donation. Correspondents include the Royal Asiatic Society, Dr Lawrence I. Conrad from the Wellcome Institute for the History of Medicine, and Walid Khalidi, 11 pieces, typed and handwritten, dated 8 August 1990 - 17 January 1991.
  • Letter from Katie Marsh, The Don Baker Memorial Fund, to thank for the contribution to the Fund. The fund will enable a conservator, Helen Loveday to work on Baker's notes and prepare them for publication. Typed, 1 piece, dated 28 October 1995.
  • Correspondence concerning a donation for a Modern Persian Conference to be held at SOAS for which the Society provided a donation towards the cost of the conference, 7 pieces, typed and handwritten, dated 14 January 2000 - 11 May 2001.
  • Correspondence concerning a donation given for the translation of articles by the Russian Numismatist, Elena Davidovitch, 2 pieces, typed, dated 9 February 2000 - 17 February 2000.
  • Correspondence concerning a donation made towards a plaque in honour of Sir Joseph Banks at the entrance of Lincoln Cathedral, 6 pieces, typed and handwritten, dated 29 February 2000 - 12 June 2000.
  • Correspondence concerning a donation to the Nicholas Lowick Project for the production of a catalogue of coins, 2 items, typed, dated 1 December 2000 - 16 May 2001.
  • Correspondence concerning a donation to support the Professor Annemarie Schimmel Memorial Seminar held by the Iqbal Academy, 3 pieces, typed, dated 28 July 2003.
  • Correspondence concerning a donation to support academic seminars at Kabul University, 2 pieces, dated 29 January 2005.
  • Correspondence concerning a donation to Eden Valley Hospice, Carlisle, in memory of Aramban Saroj, printed-out emails and letter, 2 pieces, dated 31 January 2009 - 30 September 2009.
