The Royal Asiatic Society of Great Britain and Ireland was founded by the eminent Sanskrit scholar Sir Henry Thomas Colebrooke on the 15th March 1823. It received its Royal Charter from King George IV on the 11th August 1824 'for the investigation of subjects connected with and for the encouragement of science, literature and the arts in relation to Asia'. It continues as a forum for those who are interested in the languages, cultures and history of Asia to meet and exchange ideas.

Correspondence concerning an exhibition to be held at the University of Durham to mark the Royal Asiatic Society's sesquicentenary. These are:
- Letter from Philip Rawson, Curator, Gulbenkian Museum of Oriental Art, to B.W. Robinson, President, Royal Asiatic Society, to inform that he would be happy to mount an Exhibition to commemorate the Society's Sesquicentenary, dated 2 October 1970.
- Letter from B.W. Robinson, President, Royal Asiatic Society, to Philip Rawson, Curator, Gulbenkian Museum of Oriental Art, to ask if he could give a tentative date for the exhibition and more details about it, dated 25 November 1971.
- Letter from Philip Rawson, Curator, Gulbenkian Museum of Oriental Art, to B.W. Robinson, President, Royal Asiatic Society, to inform him that there seems to be no suitable material and that there is a lack of space. However the School of Oriental Studies Library will mount a display, dated 9 December 1971.
- Letter from B.W. Robinson, President, Royal Asiatic Society, to Philip Rawson, Curator, Gulbenkian Museum of Oriental Art, to suggest that he puts on on exhibition, not directly relating to the Society, but in conjunction with its celebrations, dated 15 December 1971.
- Letter from Philip Rawson, Curator, Gulbenkian Museum of Oriental Art, to B.W. Robinson, President, Royal Asiatic Society, to inform him that there were a couple of possibilities to put on such a display as suggested by Robinson, dated 6 January 1972.
- Letter from B.W. Robinson, President, Royal Asiatic Society, to Philip Rawson, Curator, Gulbenkian Museum of Oriental Art, to concur with one of the suggestion put forward by Rawson regarding Han tomb rubbings, dated 20 November 1972.
- Letter from Philip Rawson, Curator, Gulbenkian Museum of Oriental Art, to B.W. Robinson, President, Royal Asiatic Society, to inform him that the funding for the Han tomb exhibition had fallen through and they will instead use their forthcoming exhibition on Buddhism and its Iconography as their contribution to the Society's celebrations, dated 29 November 1972.
- Letter from Diana Crawford, Secretary, Royal Asiatic Society, to Philip Rawson, Curator, Gulbenkian Museum of Oriental Art, to ask him to confirm the dates for the exhibition, dated 1 March 1973.
- Letter from Deborah Rolland, Secretary, Gulbenkian Museum of Oriental Art, to Diana Crawford, Secretary, Royal Asiatic Society, to apologise for the delay in replying but Mr Rawson was currently absent, dated 20 March 1973.
- Letter from Philip Rawson, Curator, Gulbenkian Museum of Oriental Art, to Diana Crawford, Secretary, Royal Asiatic Society, to inform her that he cannot give definite dates because of a hold up in the removal of the current exhibition, dated 28 March 1973.
