The Royal Asiatic Society of Great Britain and Ireland was founded by the eminent Sanskrit scholar Sir Henry Thomas Colebrooke on the 15th March 1823. It received its Royal Charter from King George IV on the 11th August 1824 'for the investigation of subjects connected with and for the encouragement of science, literature and the arts in relation to Asia'. It continues as a forum for those who are interested in the languages, cultures and history of Asia to meet and exchange ideas.

Correspondence regarding the donation of RAS Chinese Library to Leeds University, 1963, and lists concerning the material given. (Please note further material was given in 2005). These are:
- Correspondence with Lady Teichman and the Royal Asiatic Society regarding the donation of her husband, Sir Eric Teichman's Chinese books to the Society. These then became part of the disposal - 2 letters.
- Letter to Professor Owen Lattimore from Royal Asiatic Society to congratulate him on his appointment as Director of the new Department of Chinese Studies at Leeds University. Typed, dated 13 November 1962.
- Correspondence with Sir Roger Stevens regarding his appointment as Vice-Chancellor of Leeds University and his approval as a member of the Royal Asiatic Society - 4 letters and one newspaper cutting.
- Correspondence regarding the transfer of the Chinese books to the Brotherton Library at Leeds University and a grant of £500 made to the Royal Asiatic Society in appreciation of its gift - 6 letters.
- Two copies of a Shelf List of Chines Holdings from the Royal Asiatic Society - one is a photocopy of a handwritten list, the other a computer typed list.
