The Royal Asiatic Society of Great Britain and Ireland was founded by the eminent Sanskrit scholar Sir Henry Thomas Colebrooke on the 15th March 1823. It received its Royal Charter from King George IV on the 11th August 1824 'for the investigation of subjects connected with and for the encouragement of science, literature and the arts in relation to Asia'. It continues as a forum for those who are interested in the languages, cultures and history of Asia to meet and exchange ideas.

Correspondence regarding speakers' accommodation and the Papers they wish to present at the Symposium. These include correspondence with Connaught Hall where the speakers were to be accommodated and corespondence with individual speakers regarding their arrangements, 20 letters, dated 11 January 1973 -12 July 1973. There are five letters concerning the nature of the Papers to be presented, dated 16 April 1973 - 16 July 1973, one of which is written in German and one in French.
