Administrative history

The Royal Asiatic Society of Great Britain and Ireland was founded by the eminent Sanskrit scholar Sir Henry Thomas Colebrooke on the 15th March 1823. It received its Royal Charter from King George IV on the 11th August 1824 'for the investigation of subjects connected with and for the encouragement of science, literature and the arts in relation to Asia'. It continues as a forum for those who are interested in the languages, cultures and history of Asia to meet and exchange ideas.

Correspondence concerned with the Royal Asiatic Society Korea Branch. These are:

  • Correspondence concerning the re-establishing of the Korea Branch from Margaret Medley, Courtauld Institute; Dugald Malcolm, British Legation, Seoul; and Royal Asiatic Society. Three letters, handwritten and typed, dated 13 March -7 April 1956.
  • Letter from Colonel A.E.E. Mercer, Corresponding Member, Korea Branch, to Secretary, Royal Asiatic Society, to inform that Volume XXXIII of the Transactions of the Korea Branch was in the hands of the printers, and asking for advise concerning institutions that might be interested in subscribing to the publication. Typed, dated 22 May 1957.
  • Letter from Colonel A.E.E. Mercer, Corresponding Secretary, Korea Branch, to Mrs Davis, Secretary, Royal Asiatic Society, to ask for information concerning the Royal Asiatic Society and its branches. He also asks for confirmation of the foundation of the Korea Branch from the records of the Royal Asiatic Society. Typed, dated 11 July 1959.
