Cowell and J. Eggeling. A catalogue of 79 manuscripts and some illustrative plates. Printed journal with some annotations, 1 item, dated October 1875.

Sketch and description of a temple fresco, Reespa, on the banks of the Sutlej river, Kinnaur district, northern India. The sketch is in coloured pencil depicting the Supreme Deity, attendants and other symbolic figures. This was copied from a fresco, about 6 feet square, on the temple wall. The paper of the sketch is badly torn and care is needed in handling the document.

With the sketch is a detailed description which was told to Major Salter, Bengal Army, by the temple priest. This document also dates the item to 17 July 1838 and records that it was presented to the Society by Sir C. Malcolm (Rear-Admiral Sir Charles Malclom).

Twelve notebooks containing the author's notes on India, its religions and inscriptions, mainly extracts from, and comments upon, published authors' works.

An unlabelled notebook whose notes seem to principally be on Buddhism taken from sources such as Max Muller, Kern, Dr Sridhar V. Ketkan, Pramathanath Banerjee. Inserted in the back of the notebook are 4 printed pamphlets. These are:

"List of pictorial illustration of Nepalese and Tibetan Buddhism on cloth and on paper…" Detailed list of the subjects of these drawings with further list of papers in Trunk No.2. Prepared at Darjeeling in 1855. Handwritten, 2 pieces, 6 sides, dated 1855.

This series contains published material written, by Brian Houghton Hodgson and others, pertaining to his interest in Buddhism, which were present within his Papers. Many contain annotations in Hodgson's hand.

"Quotations in Proof of his Sketch of Buddhism by Brian Houghton Hodgson". This article first appeared in the Transactions of the Royal Asiatic Society of Great Britain and Ireland Vol II, 1830. Printed material in English and Sanskrit with some annotations, dated [1830].

On the title page Hodgson has written, "To my dearest father from his affectionate son, the Author". Hodgson has added a further note on page 3.
