The Royal Asiatic Society of Great Britain and Ireland was founded by the eminent Sanskrit scholar Sir Henry Thomas Colebrooke on the 15th March 1823. It received its Royal Charter from King George IV on the 11th August 1824 'for the investigation of subjects connected with and for the encouragement of science, literature and the arts in relation to Asia'. It continues as a forum for those who are interested in the languages, cultures and history of Asia to meet and exchange ideas.

In the Council Minutes for 9 February 1989 it was recorded that Dr Powell had reported that the Library Policy was under review and that the work with Camberwell students was progressing. The Minutes to 13 April 1989 record that the Library was being kept open during the Librarian's illness and that Conservation work was continuing, The Minutes for 8 June 1989 report that the Librarian had returned to work, conservation was containing and a sub-committee would be formed to consider policy. The Council Minutes for 12 October 1989 report the appointment of Michael Pollock as full-time librarian with Godfrey Goodwin reducing his hours to become a part-time adviser. The Minutes for 14 December approved the Library Report and agreed new Library Opening hours.
