The Royal Asiatic Society of Great Britain and Ireland was founded by the eminent Sanskrit scholar Sir Henry Thomas Colebrooke on the 15th March 1823. It received its Royal Charter from King George IV on the 11th August 1824 'for the investigation of subjects connected with and for the encouragement of science, literature and the arts in relation to Asia'. It continues as a forum for those who are interested in the languages, cultures and history of Asia to meet and exchange ideas.

- Minute of the Library Committee Meeting, 24 February 1988. With this is a Report on the Library by Godfrey Goodwin, Librarian, dated 2 February 1988.

- Conservation Report on the Library of the Royal Asiatic Society by Nicholas Pickwood, 25 May 1988. With this is a copy of a letter from Godfrey Goodwin to Nicholas Pickwood, dated 22 June 1988.

The Council Minutes for 14 April 1988 record that the Library Committee had met for the first time in two years and that Mr Pickwood would be commissioned to carry our a report on the holdings; and new Library opening hours would be trialled. The Minutes for 9 June 1988 record that the Pickwood Report would be considered and that weeding of the material would continue.The Minutes for 13 October 1988 record an estimate for conservation of the books and continuing sorting of the material. The Minutes for 8 December record that the Council approved an allocation of funds to purchase books to fill gaps and that an approach to Camberwell School of Art would be made concerning students undertaking conservation work.
