Administrative history

The Royal Asiatic Society of Great Britain and Ireland was founded by the eminent Sanskrit scholar Sir Henry Thomas Colebrooke on the 15th March 1823. It received its Royal Charter from King George IV on the 11th August 1824 'for the investigation of subjects connected with and for the encouragement of science, literature and the arts in relation to Asia'. It continues as a forum for those who are interested in the languages, cultures and history of Asia to meet and exchange ideas.

    The Council Minutes for 12 February 1987 record that the Library Committee meeting of that date had been cancelled in order to allow members of the Council to visit proposed new premises. The Minutes to 9 April 1987 record that the Library Committee had reported that the disposal of unwanted books was occurring. The Council Minutes for 11 June 1987 record that Mr Pankhurst wished to retire from the post of Librarian before the end of the summer and that Mr f.G. Goodwin would be appointed. The Minutes for 10 December 1987 records the names of people to be asked to sit on the Library Committee.
