The Royal Asiatic Society of Great Britain and Ireland was founded by the eminent Sanskrit scholar Sir Henry Thomas Colebrooke on the 15th March 1823. It received its Royal Charter from King George IV on the 11th August 1824 'for the investigation of subjects connected with and for the encouragement of science, literature and the arts in relation to Asia'. It continues as a forum for those who are interested in the languages, cultures and history of Asia to meet and exchange ideas.

The Council Minutes for 10 February 1983 record that in the Report of the Library Committee the Society's Collection had been listed and that the Librarian had presented a collection of contemporary Ethiopian drawings and the Hon. Librarian, a collection of drawings related to Captain William Francklin. The Council Minutes for 21 April 1983 record that the Report of the Library Committee was approved and that Dr Archer was thanked for supervising Mr Head's cataloguing of the Society's drawings and engravings. The Minutes for the Council Meeting for 9 June 1983 record that the Report of the Library Committee was approved as does the Minutes for 13 October 1983 and 8 December 1983, both of which also record on the continuation of the cataloguing of the drawings and engravings.
