The Royal Asiatic Society of Great Britain and Ireland was founded by the eminent Sanskrit scholar Sir Henry Thomas Colebrooke on the 15th March 1823. It received its Royal Charter from King George IV on the 11th August 1824 'for the investigation of subjects connected with and for the encouragement of science, literature and the arts in relation to Asia'. It continues as a forum for those who are interested in the languages, cultures and history of Asia to meet and exchange ideas.

The Malaysian Branch was founded at the Raffles Library, Singapore, in November 1877, as the Straits Asiatic Society. It applied for incorporation with the Royal Asiatic Society which was enacted the following year when it was renamed as the Malayan Branch of the Royal Asiatic Society. In 1964, it became the Malaysian Branch of the Royal Asiatic Society. The Journal has been published since 1878.

  • Correspondence from D.K Bassett, University of Malaya in Kuala Lumpar, to Richard Winstedt, President, Royal Asiatic Society. Two typed letters, dated 30 July 1962, one to inform of proposed change of name of the Malayan Branch and to ask regarding legal clarification of the designation, "Royal"; the second regarding an article of Bassett's published in the Journal of the Royal Asiatic Society on the East India Company in Cambodia.
  • Correspondence between the Secretaries of the two Societies concerning reciprocal member privileges. Two letters, typed, dated 30 January-17 July 1967.
  • Correspondence concerning the exchange of the Journals of the two Societies. Three letters, typed with handwritten inserts and typed, dated 28 February 1969-1 August 1969.
  • Newspaper cutting from the Daily Telegraph, entitled "Slow Police" concerning a history of the Malayan police in the Journal of the Malayan Branch, dated 26 April 1969.
  • Correspondence between Jennifer M. Scarce, Assistant Keeper, The Royal Scottish Museum, Edinburgh, and Diana Crawford, Secretary, Royal Asiatic Society, concerning locating an article from the Journal of the Malaysian Branch of the Royal Asiatic Society. Two letters, typed, dated 20 May-29 May 1969.
  • Correspondence between Rayner Norton and the Secretary of the Royal Asiatic Society regarding obtaining an article from the Journal of the Malaysian Branch. Two letters, handwritten and typed, dated 3 May-9 June 1970.
