In the 1957-1958 Essay Prize there were no competitors. There is a printed notice of the "Royal Asiatic Society's Universities Prize Essay Competition" which details the subject titles, the prize available and the basic rules. Printed material, 1 side, dated 12 October 1957.

    The Minutes of the Council Meetings for 10 October 1957 record that the subjects chosen by the President and Mr. Thompson for the Essay Prize were approved and in the Minutes for 15 February 1958 it was decided that in future advertisements of the Prize Essay that the word "matriculated" should be substituted for "passed with matriculation". In the Minutes for 10th April 1958 it was noted that there was an absence of competitors. In the report of the Anniversary Meeting in the Journal of the Royal Asiatic Society, 1958, p.227, it was also reported that there were no competitors.
