In the Council Minutes for 14 June 1956, it was recorded that Dr M. Boyce and Dr D.M. Lang were appointed examiners of the Universities Prize Essay, and in the Minutes for the 11th October 1956, the subjects for the Essay were recorded as approved. In the report of the Anniversary Meeting in the Journal of the Royal Asiatic Society, 1957, p.283, it was reported that the prize was awarded to Mr. G.R.G. Hambly, and on p.291 of the same Journal is a report of the Presentation of the award at which it was noted the unique position of Mr. Hambly as being the only recipient to have won the award twice.
