In the Minutes of the Council Meeting for 14 May 1942, the selected essay titles for the Universities Prize Essay were recorded but in the Minutes for 8 October 1942, it was recorded that no entries had been received.
The Minutes for 11 February 1943 record the essay titles selected for that year. Presumably again no essays were submitted as there is no further record of the Competition in the Minutes for 1943.
In the Minutes for 10 February 1944 it was recorded that the subject of the essays would be the same as the previous year and in the Minutes for 12 October 1944 it was recorded that the one essay submitted would be passed to the examiners.
The Minutes for 14 December 1944 record that no prize would be awarded. The Minutes for 8 February 1945 record the examiners and subjects for the 1945 Prize and in the Minutes for 13 December 1945, it was reported that the Competition was awarded to Mr. Batstone of Worcester College, Oxford.
In the Anniversary General Meeting Report (Journal of Royal Asiatic Society 1946, p. 223), it was recorded that the Universities Essay Prize was won by Mr R.F.S. Batstone.
