The Council Minutes for 9 December 1937 record the Committee appointed for the Universities Prize Essay and the Minutes for 20 January 1938 record the two essays titles selected by the Committee. In the Minutes for 13 October 1938 it was recorded that two essays had been received and these would be sent to the Convenor of the Committee. In the Report of the Anniversary General Meeting in the Journal of the Royal Asiatic Society 1939 (3), p.513, the winner of the Universities Essay Prize was recorded as Mr. A. J. Chapman.
