Handwritten account in Persian of the castes of Zamindars in the Pargana (administrative unit) of Nirun, Varanasi (Benares) District, followed by an account of the caste of Gautam, Raja of Benares. Booklet consisting of five loose pages. Simon Digby notes that it may have been produced c.1825, and come into Elliot's possession.
Addressed to W.C. Mcleod, this account of the branches of the North Indian Khatri caste is, as Simon Digby notes, written in pencil in the Persian shikasta script.
Short account in Hindi of the practices and habits of the rural Khangar (Khagar) caste, with a note in Elliot's hand on the reverse.
One loosely tied item of eleven, handwritten pages, describing the towns in the Pargana (administrative unit) of Azamgarh, with numbers of houses and religions comprising the population. Simon Digby notes that it was probably for an unpublished Gazetteer.
One manuscript table showing the castes of Zamindars and extent of holdings in the Parganas (administrative units) of Budaun (Bada'on), Azampur and Azamabad, with seals of local Tahsildars (tax inspectors) and Qanungos (local, hereditary registrars of landed property). Written in Arabic script, probably Persian or Urdu. Simon Digby notes that it was probably compiled for Henry Miers Elliot.
Documents regarding the Zila District of Fatehpur (Fathpur), with the reports or letters generally being addressed to 'The Secretary Sahib at Agra'. All in Arabic script, some noted as being Urdu, with sporadic notes in Devanagari script. Simon Digby notes seven bodies of material within this file, including: 1) Urdu report from Bhola Nath, describing the conditions of Parganas in the Zila of Fatehpur. 2) Urdu report from Madhu Ram, describing the conditions of Parganas in the Zila of Fatehpur. 3) Table of castes and tribes of Zamindars in the Pargana of Ghazipur, Zila Fatehpur, attested by the Qanungos (hereditory registrars of landed property). 4) Similar tables of castes and tribes of Zamindars from a) the districts attached to the Tahsildari (tax inspectors) of Fatehpur and b) for the Pargana of Fatehpur proper. 5) Three similar tables of castes and tribes of Zamindars for the Parganas of Ekdala and Dhata. 6) Tahsildar's report for some Parganas, including Karanpur and Muhsinpur. 7) Three further reports of Tahsildars.
A hand-drawn map of Baiswara, Eastern Uttar Pradesh, which Simon Digby notes is named in Hindi, with one note in English by Elliot, appearing to state next to four names that "these are subdivisions of the Lokhandee (?) [caste?] throughout Baiswara". There is also another note in an Arabic script, probably Persian, on the reverse of the map.
Several pages, all loosely-tied, some watermarked 1853. Written in Urdu, the papers recount a legendary history of England, from the earliest times to those of King Alfred, probably either written by or sent to Elliot. Simon Digby also notes on the front of this file a collection of mixed letters, with no single provenance, though these have not yet been found.
Copy of a Hindi lithographed newspaper, the 'Shimla Akhbar', of 15th April 1848. Simon Digby notes that it includes a description and reproduction of a copper-plate inscription from Nirmand. He also notes that this printed material is likely from the same source (Henry Miers Elliot) as the Devanagari documents in this same collection.
Fragmentary notes, in Arabic, of inscriptions on a step-well (baoli) at Khari, Old Delhi. Simon Digby notes that the item probably belonged to Elliot.
