William Edward David Allen was born in London in 1901 and educated at Eton before travelling and working in journalism. He had a lifelong passion for the history of the Caucasus region and in particular the Georgian area. He travelled much in the area and had an extensive library on Russian and Caucasian affairs. With Sir Oliver Wardrop, he founded the Georgian Society in 1930.
The material in these Papers reflects his passion for the Caucasus and is concerned with his some of his literary endeavours and publications. He was known as Bill by his close friends and W. E. D. Allen in official correspondence and publication. This is seen within these Papers. He had connections with Oswald Mosley's New Party and was a close friend of Mosley.

The Papers contain material related to some of Allen's Literary Activities and Publications.
The papers were housed in labelled files on acquisition. On repackaging in archival quality packaging, the material was kept with others in its original nominated file and the labels were used to create the titles of each series. A further series was created to list research material, originally separated, relating to Allen's "A History of the Georgian People". Thus:

The Papers were brought to the Royal Asiatic Society by Robin Allen, son of W.E.D. Allen, on 23 July 1974, after the death of his father.
The Papers were the property of W.E.D. Allen until his death, when they were bequeathed to the Royal Asiatic Society. It is unknown if the material in WA/8 concerning Allen's "A History of the Georgian People" was donated at the same time or at an earlier date.
This material was arranged and catalogued by Nancy Charley, RAS Archivist, with volunteer help in 2017-2018.

In 1923 he began to lecture on Persian literature at the École nationale des langues orientales vivantes, where he subsequently taught Turkish and Islamic history. In 1930 he was named Oriental Secretary to the 1931 International Exhibition of Persian Art at Burlington House, London, and in 1932 was made lecturer in Persian at London's School of Oriental Studies. In 1933 he became Reader in Persian Literature and History, University of London; Professor of Persian in 1937; and in 1944 retired but continued to work until his death.
He was awarded the Royal Asiatic Society's Triennial Gold Medal in 1962.

Terence James Stannus Gray was born in Felixstowe, Suffolk, England on 14 September 1895. He was raised on an estate in the Gog Magog Hills outside Cambridge, England and educated at Ascham St Vincent's School, Eastbourne, Eton and Oxford University. Early in life he pursued an interest in Egyptology which culminated in the publication of two books on ancient Egyptian history and culture in 1923. In 1926, Gray, with no previous practical theatrical experience, opened the Cambridge Festival Theatre as an experimental playhouse. After he had apparently exhausted his interest in the theatre, his thoughts turned towards philosophy and metaphysics. This led to a period of travel throughout Asia. Between the years 1958 and 1974 eight books and articles in various periodicals appeared under the pseudonym "Wei Wu Wei". In the later part of his life he lived with his second wife, the Georgian princess Natalie Margaret Imeretinsky, in Monaco and became interested in Georgian history.
Gray maintained his family's racehorses in England and Ireland and in 1957 his horse Zarathrustra won the Ascot Gold Cup, ridden by jockey Lester Piggott in the first of his eleven wins of that race.

Gray asks about the lineage in reference to other scholars' genealogical division of this period of Georgian history. Gray had also attached a genealogical tree he had drawn up based on information included in Allen's work inquiring about its accuracy. This includes specific references to various pages in Allen's books on the genealogy and history of Georgian royalty. Dated: 4 November 1957.

This is a series of correspondence mainly between W.E.D. Allen and Raleigh Ashlin Skelton (known as Peter to his friends, and in these letters). There is some correspondence with Skelton's daughter after Skelton was killed in a car accident.
Raleigh Ashlin (Peter) Skelton was born in 1906 in Plymouth. He served as the Assistant Keeper of the Department of Printed Books of the British Museum from 1931 to 1953, with a break for military service from 1939 to 1945, and as Deputy Keeper from 1953 to 1967. He began work in the Map Room of the British Museum upon his return from military service in 1945 and in 1950 became the Superintendent, in which post he continued until his retirement in 1967. He died in a car crash in 1970.

This series consists of images collected by Allen for possible use in "The History of Georgian People" and some research notes. The book was published in 1932, so presumably the material was collated before this time.
It is unknown if the material in this series was part of the same donation as the rest of the Allen material or had come into the Society at an earlier date, as it had been housed separately.
